A Tree Company That Knows North Jersey's Trees
North Jersey is tree country — mature oaks, maples, and ash line the streets of Paterson and Clifton, tower over Wayne's lake communities, and fill the older lots of Passaic and Hackensack. Those trees are part of what makes these towns beautiful, and they're also the reason a single nor'easter can drop a limb through your roof at 2 AM. When that happens — or when you're staring at a dead ash leaning toward your garage — you need a crew that knows these trees, these soils, and these neighborhoods.
Tree Doc NJ is a local tree service, not a franchise crew dispatched from three counties away. Our climbers and bucket operators work the same streets you live on. We know that the pin oaks along Paterson's older blocks are notorious for dropping massive limbs in ice storms. We know Wayne's lake communities have mature white pines with shallow root systems that topple in saturated soil. And we know that in Passaic and Hackensack, where lots are tight and houses sit close together, a removal that looks simple from the street can require crane work, rigging, and serious planning to bring a tree down without touching a roof, a fence, or the neighbor's shed.
Most of our calls fall into two buckets. The first is urgent: a tree came down in a storm, a limb is hanging over the driveway, or something is leaning in a way that makes your stomach drop every time the wind picks up. The second is planned: a dead tree that's been standing for two years and keeps getting worse, roots lifting the sidewalk, a stump from last year's removal that's now a tripping hazard and a mushroom farm, or a yard that needs clearing before a fence, pool, or addition goes in.
Both are fixable, and both get the same treatment: a real on-site estimate, a firm price before we touch a saw, and a crew that cleans up like we were never there. Tree work is dangerous, messy work when it's done wrong. Done right, your biggest job of the day is picking which branches to keep.
What we do
Tree Removal
Dead, dying, storm-damaged, or just in the wrong place — we remove trees of any size, including tight-lot removals that need crane lifts and controlled rigging. Stumps ground out, wood hauled or stacked, yard left clean.
Tree removal in Paterson →Tree Trimming & Pruning
Crown thinning, deadwood removal, clearance pruning over roofs and driveways, and structural pruning for young trees. Proper cuts, never topping — topping destroys trees and we won't do it.
Tree trimming in Wayne →Stump Grinding
Stumps ground 6–12 inches below grade, chips hauled or left as mulch, and the hole backfilled so you can replant or sod right over it. Root chasing for problem stumps near foundations.
Stump grinding in Clifton →Emergency Storm Service
Trees on houses, trees on cars, trees blocking driveways — we run 24/7 storm response across North Jersey. Call any time; we triage by hazard level and get the dangerous ones first.
Storm cleanup in Hackensack →Lot & Land Clearing
Overgrown lots, brush-choked backyards, and pre-construction clearing for additions, fences, and pools. Selective clearing that keeps the trees worth keeping and removes everything else.
Lot clearing in Passaic →Not Sure What You Need?
Send us a photo or describe what you're seeing — leaning trunk, dead branches, mushrooms at the base, roots in the sewer line. We'll tell you honestly whether it needs work or just watching.

Why North Jersey Calls Tree Doc NJ
- Real climbers and operators, not day labor. Tree work is the most dangerous job in home services. Our crew is trained, equipped, and insured — your roof and your family are never the training ground.
- Free, honest estimates. We'll look at the tree, explain your options, and give you a firm price. If a tree doesn't need to come down, we'll tell you — we'd rather earn a customer for life than sell a removal you don't need.
- We clean up like we were never there. Limbs chipped, logs hauled or stacked to your preference, sawdust blown off the driveway, lawn raked. The yard should look better when we leave.
- 24/7 storm response. Storms don't check the clock. When a tree hits your house at midnight, you get a live answer and a crew dispatched by hazard priority.
- Crane and rigging capability. Trees over houses, pools, power lines, and fences need more than a chainsaw and a prayer. We rig and lower sections in a controlled way — no "hope it misses the garage" drops.
- Clear, upfront pricing. You know the cost before we start. No surprise add-ons halfway through the job, no pressure tactics at your kitchen table.
How it works
1. Call or text. Tell us what you're dealing with — a photo helps enormously. We'll usually give you a ballpark on the spot and schedule a free on-site estimate. 2. Estimate. We look at the tree, the access, the hazards, and the cleanup, then give you a firm written price. 3. The work. We show up on time, protect your lawn and landscaping, do the job safely, and clean up thoroughly. 4. Follow-up. Stump grinding, replanting advice, or pruning schedules — we'll tell you what comes next so the yard keeps improving.
Common Questions
How much does tree removal cost in North Jersey?
It depends on size, location, and access. Small ornamental trees often run $300–$600; medium trees $600–$1,200; large removals $1,200–$2,500+; and crane-assisted jobs over houses or pools can exceed $3,000. Stump grinding is usually quoted separately. We give free on-site estimates with a firm price — read our full NJ tree removal cost guide for the details.
Do you offer emergency tree service after storms?
Yes — 24/7. Trees on houses, hanging limbs, blocked driveways: call any time at (973) 653-8456. We triage by hazard level, so the tree through your roof gets priority over the one lying in the backyard. Emergency rates apply for nights, weekends, and holidays.
Will you top my trees to make them shorter?
No — and you don't want a company that will. Topping creates weak, fast-growing shoots that are more likely to break, invites decay into the trunk, and ruins the tree's structure. If a tree is too big for its location, the honest answer is crown reduction done properly or removal, not topping.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in NJ?
It depends on your town. Many North Jersey municipalities require permits for removing trees above a certain diameter, and some protect heritage or street trees. We'll tell you what your town requires during the estimate and can help with the paperwork — but the permit itself is the homeowner's responsibility.
What happens to the wood and debris?
Your choice. We chip brush on-site and haul everything away as the standard service, or we can cut the trunk into firewood-length rounds and stack them for you. Stump chips can be hauled or left as mulch. Just tell us what you want during the estimate.
Are you insured if something goes wrong?
Yes — we're licensed and insured, and we'll provide a certificate of insurance on request before any work begins. Never hire a tree service that can't produce one; if an uninsured crew drops a limb through your neighbor's roof, the liability lands on you.
