How Much Does Tree Removal Cost in NJ?

Short answer: most North Jersey removals run $600–$1,800. Small trees $300–$600, large ones $1,200–$2,500+, and crane jobs over houses start around $3,000. Here's what actually drives the price.

Tree removal prices by size

Size is the starting point for every quote, because it determines the crew size, the equipment, and the hours. These are realistic 2026 ranges for North Jersey — Paterson, Clifton, Passaic, Wayne, and Hackensack:

• Small trees (under 25 ft) — $300–$600. Ornamentals, small dogwoods, young trees. Often done in a couple of hours.
• Medium trees (25–60 ft) — $600–$1,200. The most common residential job: a mature maple or ash in a normal yard.
• Large trees (60–80 ft) — $1,200–$2,500. Big oaks, mature maples, tall pines. Usually a full-day job for a crew.
• Extra-large / crane jobs (80 ft+ or over structures) — $2,500–$5,000+. When the tree has to be lifted over your house in pieces, the crane is the price driver.

Stump grinding is usually quoted separately: $150–$400 per stump depending on diameter, often discounted when bundled with the removal.

What drives the price up (or down)

Access is everything. A tree in an open yard that can be felled in one piece is the cheapest possible removal. A tree wedged between two houses in Passaic with no drop zone — requiring a climber to dismantle it piece by piece on ropes, or a crane lifting sections over the roof — costs dramatically more.

Condition matters. Dead trees are more dangerous to work on — the wood is unpredictable, limbs snap without warning, and climbing may be unsafe, which forces slower, more labor-intensive methods. A dead ash or a storm-split trunk costs more than the same tree alive and sound.

Cleanup scope. Full chip-and-haul is standard for us — always ask whether the price includes chipping brush, hauling logs, and raking. A cheaper quote that leaves a mountain of debris isn't cheaper at all.

Permits and obstacles. Trees near power lines, over pools, or tangled with fences and sheds add rigging time. Some towns require permits that add lead time to the schedule.

Does insurance cover tree removal?

Usually only after damage happens. If a tree falls on your house, garage, or car, homeowners insurance typically covers the removal of the tree from the structure plus repairs, minus your deductible. What insurance almost never covers: removing a dead or dangerous tree before it falls, or hauling away a tree that fell in your yard without hitting anything. Most policies also cap debris removal at around $500–$1,000 per event — well short of a big removal. Don't wait for insurance to solve a hazard tree; it won't.

How to avoid overpaying

• Bundle work. Two or three trees in one visit cost far less per tree than three separate visits. Team up with a neighbor and split a crew day.
• Go off-season. Late fall and winter are slower for tree companies — scheduling then can mean better availability and sometimes better pricing.
• Keep the wood. If you burn firewood, having us cut rounds and stack them instead of hauling everything away saves on disposal.
• Grind the stump now. Bundling stump grinding with the removal is almost always cheaper than calling someone back later.
• Get it in writing. A firm written price beats a verbal estimate every time. And verify insurance — an uninsured crew is never actually the cheap option.

Red flags in a tree removal quote

Watch for quotes dramatically lower than everyone else — they usually mean no insurance, no cleanup, or a crew that plans to drop the whole tree and hope. Other red flags: demanding full payment up front, no written contract, no certificate of insurance on request, and anyone who suggests topping as a "cheaper alternative" to removal. A legitimate company gives you a written price, shows proof of insurance, and cleans up.
